BankWest Mortgage Company History

The history of BankWest Mortgage Company can be traced back to the year 1895 when it was first established as Agricultural Bank of Western Australia. Agricultural Bank of Western Australia was known as a rural lender that is dedicated to serving the financial needs of Western Australia's farming industry. Agricultural Bank of Western Australia became a full trading bank in 1945 by changing its name to Rural and Industries Bank of Western Australia.

In preparation for its upcoming privatisation, Rural and Industries Bank of Western Australia changed its name to Bank of Western Australia Limited. BankWest is the chosen trading name for BankWest Mortgage Company. The Bank of Scotland gained control of operations of the BankWest Mortgage Company in December 1995. As a part of the sales agreement, the Bank of Scotland offered around 49% of BankWest Mortgage Company shares to the public. On February 1996, BankWest Mortgage Company joined the long list of companies on the Australian Stock Exchange.
