Affording A Holiday While On A Mortgage
Monday January 12, 2009
Repaying your mortgage company can put many other expenses on hold, but you are likely to need a holiday away at some point during your mortgage. While most mortgage tips focus on how to save more money to put into your mortgage, it can also be useful to know how to best use money when you need to spend it on something like a holiday instead. You obviously aren't going to spend all of your time using mortgage calculators and going through mortgage company profiles when you have time off, so be sure to work out how to get the most out of what you spend on holidays, so that you can keep saving the majority of your money for your mortgage.
First of all, when planning where to go, consider going to unique destinations or to more common spots in the off-season. Many areas that are not known for tourism will work extra hard to make tourists happy, and thus you can get more value out of your travel dollar.
Next, plan as far ahead of time as possible. Often, the earlier you book, the cheaper things are. Be sure to confirm bookings, though, as you may otherwise find yourself in trouble while away.
If you can, avoid shopping tourism. People who visit places known for good shopping will often find that money they'd intended to go to their mortgage company will instead be spent on frivolous purchases and extra baggage or shipping costs.
One last way to possibly save money is to go with friends. There are many holiday opportunities that receive a significant discount for bookings in groups and it can also be much more enjoyable to travel with people you know. Don't attempt to keep up with their spending, however, and if you are visiting a country where tipping is customary, don't try to save by foregoing tips.
